Project Summary
The Idaho State Police (ISP) contacted Tyler Idaho in April 2023, in need of an updated, cohesive website. The goal of the redesign was to create a modern, user-friendly, comprehensive, and resource-driven website. The previous website had many different web parts creating an inconsistent look and feel. The various web parts created confusion for the end-users when navigating which then created questions and concerns populating more phone calls and emails.
Research & Planning
We worked with ISP to research and gather information and analytic data about the previous website, what the top priorities were for the new site, and overall design aspects they wanted included in the new site. To help in this process, we used our website design questionanire that covers a variety of areas to help us and the agency determine the the overall goals and features they want included in the website. From there, we created 3 different home page mockups. After consideration and feedback, we settled on a final mockup and discussed how the interior pages, menus, and more would look. Around this same time, we were working on a new website for the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) (https://post.idaho.gov/), and for cohesiveness we integrated some features from the POST site in the new ISP website too.
Project Stats
- Redesign was launched July 9, 2024
- ISP updated and migrated 100+ web pages
- 10,000+ news releases were imported into the new site and configured to send automatic updates to subscribers via Gov Delivery
- 50+ meetings and training sessions were held
- 3,000+ documents migrated
Project Highlights
Tyler Idaho worked with ISP to identify ways to improve the overall user experience on the website and internal efficiencies for the ISP staff maintaining the website.
From our regular meetings, we created a new Missing Person Alerts feature (isp.idaho.gov/alerts) that previously ISP used Twitter or Facebook to distribute the information. Adding a designated, easy way for staff to post these made for a more reliable way for the public to access the information and for media to link to it as well.
Tyler Idaho helped configured integrated push notifications for news releases to subscribers using Gov Delivery. Subscribers can sign up for the categories or districts they want to receive emails about news releases from, and once they are posted on the website they will be immediately emailed the news release.
Custom shortcodes were created to allow ISP to quickly and easy display documents by folders, list or table. This allows ISP staff to save valuable amounts of time manually adding multiple documents to a page
Post-Launch Highlights
Overall, the redesigned website has received numerous positive reviews and feedback. The fresh design has also been helpful for ISP's latest hiring campaigns!
- The previous website did not have a tool to search within the site. A site search was included in the redesign and has averaged over 60 unique searches per day.
- On a national level, over 60% of website traffic comes from mobile devices (source). The new ISP website is in line with this statistic at 61.5% of the website visits coming from a mobile device since launching the redesign.
- ISP planned well to similify and streamline the website content during the redesign process. They were able to reduce unnecessary or outdated website content that was still disoverable by 42%.
